FAQs

A Shaker kitchen is a classic British kitchen style characterised by simple framed doors, in-frame cabinetry, clean lines, and carefully balanced proportions. The design avoids unnecessary decoration, allowing craftsmanship, function, and materials to take the lead.

Every Culshaw Shaker kitchen is handmade in the UK by skilled craftspeople, with every element carried out in the Lancashire workshop. Rather than assembling pre-made units, each bespoke kitchen is built from the ground up, with individual components crafted specifically for the project.
The timescale for a bespoke Shaker kitchen reflects the level of craftsmanship involved. The design phase allows time to fully understand the space, refine proportions, and tailor every detail to the client’s needs. Once the design is approved, production takes place in our workshop, where each component is made, finished, and prepared for installation.
Support does not end at installation. Culshaw Kitchens provides a Craftsman’s Warranty that covers cabinetry against defects in materials and workmanship for a period of ten years from production. If any adjustments are required after installation, support is handled in line with this warranty. The warranty applies to bespoke cabinetry units and does not cover appliances, sinks, taps, or worktops, which remain under their respective manufacturers’ warranties. Appliances must be registered within two weeks of installation to ensure coverage. Full details can be found on the Craftsman’s Warranty page.
Clients are involved at every key stage, without feeling overwhelmed. Design decisions are guided by experienced designers who translate preferences into a cohesive bespoke kitchen, helping clients feel confident rather than uncertain throughout the process.
The longevity of the kitchen is supported by traditional in-frame construction, modern engineered materials, and coverage under Culshaw’s ten-year Craftsman’s Warranty for cabinetry.
Yes. Every Shaker kitchen we create is completely bespoke, designed and built specifically for the home it belongs in. Cabinet dimensions, layouts, storage solutions, and finishes are all tailored to the space and the way it is used. We build each handmade kitchen from scratch in our Lancashire workshop. Each Shaker kitchen is designed and built to order in Lancashire, with no standard cabinet sizes, layouts, or fixed specifications.
Cabinet carcasses are constructed from German-manufactured melamine MDF, selected for its strength, moisture resistance, and long-term stability. Shaker doors are made from hydrofugo MDF, a modern material chosen for its superior resistance to twisting and cracking compared to traditional solid timber doors. Cabinet frames are produced from tulipwood, which provides excellent structural strength and is particularly well suited to securely connecting cabinetry. Quartz worktops are specified in collaboration with Finch’s Granite, a trusted local supplier, offering durability, consistency, and refined finish options.
Absolutely. While the Shaker kitchen has its foundation in tradition, it is exceptionally well suited to modern living. Integrated appliances such as fridges, freezers, ovens, dishwashers, and even the everyday microwave are carefully incorporated behind cabinetry, preserving the clean appearance while delivering contemporary convenience.
Shaker kitchens suit a wide range of colours from classic off-whites and soft greys to deeper heritage tones. Because the design is simple and proportion led, colour choices remain timeless rather than trend driven.
Yes. A bespoke Shaker kitchen is often an ideal solution for smaller or awkward spaces. Because the cabinetry is handmade and built to order, every unit is sized precisely to the room, allowing for better use of space than standard kitchen units. In-frame cabinetry, tailored storage, and considered layout planning help maximise functionality without the kitchen feeling crowded.
Yes. Although the Shaker style is known for its simplicity, it allows for a great deal of personalisation. Colour palettes, internal storage layouts, worktop materials, handles, and subtle detailing can all be tailored to reflect individual preferences. The key is that these choices are made within a considered framework, ensuring the kitchen remains unmistakably Shaker while still feeling entirely personal.
A bespoke Shaker kitchen is an investment in longevity and daily ease. Because it is designed specifically for the space and built using in-frame construction and modern, stable materials, it avoids many of the compromises that lead to replacement or repair in the future. Over time, the value becomes clear through reliability, comfort, and a design that does not date.
High-end manufactured kitchens often focus on appearance first, using standardised components behind the scenes. A handmade Shaker kitchen is built from the structure outward, prioritising craftsmanship, proportion, and material integrity. The difference is felt in how the kitchen performs and how well it ages.
Shaker kitchens are defined by restraint rather than decoration. This makes them adaptable across architectural styles, from period homes to contemporary builds. When paired with modern materials, appliances, and lighting, the result feels current while remaining timeless.
A well-made bespoke kitchen is often easier to live with. Durable finishes, stable materials, and thoughtful storage reduce wear and simplify cleaning. The design supports everyday use rather than demanding constant care.
No. Bespoke kitchens are often most effective in smaller or awkward rooms because cabinetry is made to fit precisely. This allows better use of space and avoids the compromises of standard units.
A high-quality handmade kitchen is widely recognised as a lasting asset. Buyers tend to notice craftsmanship and material quality immediately, which can positively influence both appeal and value.
The process is structured to feel clear and collaborative. Most clients comment that they’ve never been so involved with the details of their kitchen, and how revealing the process was. Decisions are guided carefully, with each stage building logically on the last.
Most clients comment on how natural the kitchen feels once installed. It fits the house, supports daily routines, and settles in quickly, which is often the strongest confirmation that the right decision was made.
